Janaki Ranpura
Writing playful scenarios involving deep myths and community-derived knowledge, Janaki Ranpura creates art and writing to make space for ideas that she feels need more space. Her projects include a text display of embarrassing feelings during the 2021 New Year in Times Square, a two-story singing chamber on a frozen lake that made a room for stories of transition out of incarceration, and a steel framework covered in fragrant plants which, post George Floyd, made some space to breathe. She has exhibited at museums and galleries such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Walker Art Center, and a Nobel Lounge at the American Swedish Institute, leading to awards from Tala Lighting company and the Helen Hamlyn Center for Inclusive Design. She has had fellowships at the Santa Fe Art Institute, the Playwrights Center of Minneapolis, and Macdowell. This article connects with research she and Dr Valentine Cadieux are doing for Kitchen Ecologies, a project about new rituals to deal with climate anxiety. janakiranpura.com (https://www.coonoorandco.com/broken-by-bread/janakiranpura.com)Read Less (https://www.coonoorandco.com/broken-by-bread/#)
