Black Mountains

Our collection of cushion covers celebrates the exquisite craftsmanship of Toda artistry. Made with the locally sourced traditional cotton that the Toda people have long cherished, the cover is hand embroidered with the historic Twerr Pukhoor or mountain motif. One of the oldest of the Toda designs, this design features complex geometric patterns representing the mountains. Each cover merges this timeless art form with contemporary design, offering a sophisticated accent that enriches any living space.

Our collection of cushion covers celebrates the exquisite heritage of GI-tagged Toda embroidery. Exceptionally crafted directly onto the locally sourced traditional cotton cloth long cherished by this (endangered) community and incorporating (sustainable/organic) cotton threads. The indigenous Toda women from the Nilgiris are renowned for their distinctive, black and red embroidery. Inspired by nature, the pukhoor (motif) embroidery follows the base cloth’s warp and weft thread count, with artisans counting the threads with their fingers by merely stretching the material as they work.

For over two years, we have been working with senior Toda women artisans to reimagine their traditional art form with a modern aesthetic on sustainable fabrics and in new formats. Our goal has been to showcase the exquisite beauty of this rare art form to a contemporary and aesthetically driven audience. This journey is ongoing, and we remain committed to sharing this unique art form with those who appreciate it.
