The Toda shawl, known as Puthkuzhy, is a garment deeply rooted in the heritage of the Toda community of the Nilgiris. Renowned for their intricate, GI-tagged embroidery, these shawls are not just apparel but a testament to Indigenous artistry and culture.

We collaborated with local weavers to specially craft the traditionally used cotton with a softer, lighter weave, enhancing its wearability and versatility while staying true to heritage. The ancient motifs, inspired by the sacred Toda landscape, feature mountains, elements of nature and endemic forest botanicals.

Hand-embroidered with care over four weeks by a Toda artisan, this fully reversible shawl captures the essence of slow, sustainable luxury. Each piece is accompanied by a note about the makers, offering a glimpse into the story behind this extraordinary craft. Read more below.

The indigenous Toda women from the Nilgiris are renowned for their distinctive, GI-tagged, black and red embroidery. Inspired by nature, the pukhoor (motif) embroidery follows the base cloth’s warp and weft thread count. The artisans count the thread with their fingers by merely stretching the material as they work.

Our journey with the Toda Project began two years ago, though it has been many years in the making. Starting as a small collective of seven, we have grown to nearly 50 artisans and designers, working together to celebrate and sustain this rare art form. We collaborated with local weavers and went beyond traditional cotton to develop fine, sustainable fabrics tailored to the intricate thread-counting technique. This renewed approach required numerous trials to honour the precision and heritage of this rare craft.

With fewer than 1,700 Todas and only 500 artisans practicing, preserving this art is vital to sustaining the community’s cultural identity. At the heart of our work is a commitment to the artisans. We ensure fair wages, support skill development, and create opportunities for the next generation to embrace this heritage.

Our vision is to ensure that this work remains meaningful to both the artisan and the patron. We are driven by the shared purpose of preserving this extraordinary art form.

shawl-1-2

Our shawls are made from cotton, which is traditionally used by the Toda community. This version of the fabric is specially woven to achieve a softer and more refined texture while maintaining its authentic strength. We use pure cotton threads for the embroidery.

Variations in the motifs and subtle irregularities in the fabric are natural characteristics of handcrafted and woven products, enhancing their distinct appeal.

Fabric Care Guide:

  • Handwash gently in cold water or dry-clean
  • Cool or low-temperature iron only (smooth side)
  • Do not bleach
  • Do not tumble dry
  • Recommended flat dry after washing
